The Ritual of December

December, and the months leading up to it, are some of the busiest moments of the year. Yet as winter approaches, nature asks us to do the opposite. We are supposed to slow down, store our nuts and berries, and settle into a kind of hibernation. Dare I even say we’re meant to carry a little extra weight to keep us insulated while we rest in the metaphorical cave until spring.
But we are far removed from those instinctive ways of being. Today, “busy” is the norm. We’re scrambling toward end of year deadlines, juggling social engagements, dodging the flu, moving through back to back holidays, gatherings, school plays, shopping, traffic, travel, and on top of that, the ever present pressure that “summer bodies are made in the winter.” No wonder we’re overwhelmed. It feels like there’s simply too much to do in too little time.
Or is there?
We hold more power than we believe to shift this narrative. When we pause the December chaos, we start to see where opportunities to thrive reveal themselves. Instead of succumbing to the overwhelm and anxiety that often rob us of the Spirit of the season, we can choose something different. This intentional pivot might be one of your biggest acts of self care all year.
So how do we do this?
We put ourselves first. It is ok to say no. There’s nothing admirable about stretching yourself thin, I promise. I’ve learned this firsthand. Weed out what sparks dread.
Now we’ve created room to breathe. This is where we slow time down. Yes, you have the power to bend time. I dare you to try it. Fill the newly open spaces with the rituals and sensory moments that actually evoke Spirit for you.
Consider the things that will make you happier, activities that fill your cup. Yule offers so many options to lift the senses.
Soak in a bath with HeadPlant and sprigs of rosemary
Cook with your family using recipes carried down through the generations
Hike in the woods taking in the fragrance of pine
Create a fire pit with friends and celebrate just how good life is
Attend a vigil in remembrance
Book yourself that massage with HeadPlant body serum
Enjoy winter light displays
Create sensory journeys through aromatherapy like a simmer pot of oranges, cloves, etc.
In the end, it all comes back to intention and mindfulness that centers you. Allow yourself to return to that remembrance of your own spirit. When we keep our cups full, we naturally bask in life’s simplest pleasures. Give way to the Spirit of the season, the promise of a new year, and the brighter days ahead. You deserve peace and joy, body, mind, and soul.
Thank you for allowing HeadPlant to be part of your self care rituals, your body recovery, and your pursuit of wellness over the years. We wish you the warmest holiday season and the brightest beginning to a new year.
